AbiWord  by AbiSource
Business and Productivity → Word Processing → Word Processors

AbiWord is an Open Sourcew word processor similar to Microsoft® Word. AbiWord has been designed to integrate perfectly with the operating system it runs on and take advantage of the functionality provided by the system, such as image loading or printing capabilities. What use is a Word Processor when you can't share your documents with your friends?...

This is a simple word processor, but due to it's multiple platform versions it may be the most common Freeware word processor, particularly among alternative OS users. Users of BeOS, Mac, Linux, Windows, etc. all have free access to AbiWord.

Not a bad program but does not give you the option to save in different Word documents like 97, 2000 or XP. Has a nice template package. Still like Open Office 2.0 better.

abiword can save data in it's own propietary format (.abw)
But it is NOT compatible with Microsoft Office format (.doc)
I've tried many times to open and save in .doc file but it will NOT display properly.
It lack the feature equation editor, but able to insert picture or table
