yWriter  by Simon Haynes
Business and Productivity → Word Processing → Professional Writer Tools

yWriter is a free novel-writing software, it may look simple but, as the author of four books written with this tool, I can guarantee it has everything needed to get a first draft together. Organise your novel using a 'project', add chapters to the project, add scenes, characters, items and locations. Display the word count for every file in the project, along with a total....

I started with yWriter3...just played with it, really. yWriter4 was a huge step forward, but I actually began working with yWriter5 to complete work on a novel I have written. I had worked in both Word and WordPerfect, saved the chapters per the developers instructions and they imported beautifully into yWriter5. I've completed the editing, and now I'm using the built in description fields to create my synopsis. This is VERY powerful software, and it keeps getting better. If you are serious about writing a book or short story, this is something you should seriously consider.

Always good to see an obviously genuine review of a program, even better that it's positive ;-)

Good luck with your book lefo.

In case you haven't thought of this already it's probably a good idea to contact the program author for help as well.

His E-mail address is on the contact page on his website.
