AVG is a good, freeware antivirus, although I have found that the update process can sometimes be a little intrusive. I have an older computer and the update sometimes slows down progress to a point that I have to leave other processes until the update is complete. Also, the non-commercial user license requires renewal annually.
Those quibbles aside, AVG is good protection, and generously distributed at no cost. Updates are automatically downloaded frequently to keep protection current.

I agree with you Kittybriton the update process is a nuisance if you're in the middle of something. I set the update time to a time when my system is NEVER on & also allow it to update when an Internet connection is detected. That way it updates when I start up my system. You can also stop it updating automatically & do it manually when convenient - just as long as you don't forget ;)
Quoting: Kittybriton the non-commercial user license requires renewal annually.
That's a new one on me, I've used this program for years & NEVER had to 'renew' anything. It's now over a year since they brought out version 7 but it hasn't nagged me to do anything about the licence.

The latest version, 8.5 is causing problems for some people. It will not install, giving an error saying it cannot create a registry key. I have tried several solutions for this from various forums and AVG itself, however I am unable to install this software.
It's a pity, the AVG system has been very good up until now. I may have to go with another virus scanner until they sort this out, but would continue to use AVG if I could.
So if you have AVG 8.0 and it is working fine, don't be like me and try to upgrade to 8.5. I wish I hadn't.

IMHO version 8 has been bad from the start. It's bloated, invasive & tries to do everything - anti virus + anti spyware + email scan + file scan etc.etc. Several times over the past year the automatic updates have glitched & a couple have even caused problems!!
I disliked AVG 8 from the start. It flagged a whole pile of file associations for automatic file scanning even though I had chosen NOT to install this feature. Because it couldn't scan anything properly it messed up several of my programs. If I clicked on a .doc or .xls file in my documents folder, Word or Excel opened but the file didn't. I have a very old version of PaintShop, all of the file associations in its options disappeared & it couldn't open anything!!
When one of the recent updates glitched I went to AVG's website & I noticed that they are still providing updates for 7.5 & I still have a copy of that version :-) I finally got so fed up that I uninstalled AVG 8 & reinstalled AVG 7.5, I've been running it for a couple of months. All of my programs are back to working properly, my system is faster & I'm happy!!
There is one thing with version 7.5 - it pops up a nag screen that support is ceasing & to upgrade to version 8, EVERY time it updates. When I first reinstalled it the end-of-support date was March 18. On March 19 it updated as usual but no nag. On March 20 the nag was back but the date is now April 12. This nag is ANNOYING but version 7.5 is worth it!!!!!

Does anyone have any comparisons between AVG and AntiVir?? I've been using AntiVir free version for a couple of years now, and been very satisfied with it; it's quick, low-overhead, and problem free. When PcWorld and PcMag did AntiVirus reviews in the past, AntiVir has rated very high in its scanning success. Yet I rarely see any comments on it, in online reviews...
AntiVir's handling of false positives is interesting; the hit dialog has a button to report false positives, but they never respond to the report. However, in every case, they've fixed the problem in the next day's update!! That's been pretty good for me.
Anyway, y'all might consider AntiVir as an alternative, if you continue to be annoyed by AVG's activities.

I have been using Antivir for only a couple of weeks and I have to say the pop-ups are absolutely driving me insane. A full scan of my computer takes over 2 and a half hours, and it returns a ridiculous amount of false positives. Granted, none of these things actually speak to how well it does its job, but for now, I will just stick with the antivirus my company installed on my laptop.

AVG's downlink uses CNET.com and for some reason I couldn't get that to work either.
Here's an alternative link that seems to be ok.

AVG's downloads do glitch from time to time! I have now changed our links to Softpedia where you can download the program directly & also read their comments!
I am really in 2 minds about even keeping this listing!!!
The AVG download page:
1) Offers the free version:- the download link redirects to CNet's Download.com then what you get is an 871 K download manager to download the 75.7 Megabyte bloatware + adware program file!!
2) Offers the full version for FREE: BUT this is IMHO a deliberately misleading marketing deal that is designed to benefit AVG not you! It WILL cost you money because you have to sign up for at least one of the "offers" & spend money before you get your AVG 'free' licence. You could easily spend MORE money than if you bought the full AVG program to begin with!!
Softpedia classes AVG Free Edition as Adware because:
It offers to download or install AVG Security Toolbar that the program does not require to fully function.
It tries to change your default search engine to Yahoo.
Even if you can go along with all of that there's still the HUGE 75.7 megabyte program file! I definitely won't be downloading/installing AVG again!

That's not free, I scanned for free but when I wanted to fix problems, it said I had to buy it to remove viruses and trojans, so I used the 30 day trial.

Inuyasha_Fan you posted into an old topic page so you probably didn't see all of these comments.
I haven't looked at AVG since January, finding/downloading/installing the truly free version was a exercise in frustration then & I'm sure it still is! Try PandaCloud instead ;-)
