System Utilities → System Tools → System Information

The Update Notifier is a small utility that scans your computer for installed software and displays a list of updates. Also you can see the latest updates for applications from your Watch List. You can see the status of ALL of your installed software with direct download links for each one....

Sadly only comes up with one programme for me. I may have misunderstood but there seems to be no way to configure it differently. So, not for someone unqualified but relatively experienced in using freeware on their system.
